Horses: Photographs, by Michael Eastman

March 24, 2011

Although Horses: Photographs, by Michael Eastman (First edition, 2003), is a little different from the other books in the collection, not being about racing, breeding, or training, it belongs in the collection, as an homage to the beauty of the horse. I am struck by the variety of the images in this oversize book, typically focused just on the horse themselves, not on the scenery around them. Self-taught photographer Eastman, influenced by Edward Weston, Walker Evans, and Henry Moore, captures the essence and romanticism of the horse, in these sepia toned and black and white photographs. As he says, “All animals are wonderful, but horses are truly mythic.”

Beautiful photographs of horses in this brand new book. Introductions by Jane Smiley and William Gass.

As of 12/11, this  lovely book is now sold.
